The 40th Ministerial Meeting of the COMCEC was held under the auspices of H.E. Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN, President of the Republic of Türkiye, on 4-5 November 2024 with the participation of over 500 delegates, 36 of which were Ministers and Deputy Ministers from 45 OIC Member Countries, and 24 international organizations. Throughout the meeting, about 50 bilateral talks were carried out between Member Countries, international organizations and private sector representatives.

The Ministerial Meeting commenced on 4 November 2024 with the opening speech of the H.E. Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN, President of the Republic of Türkiye. Following His Excellency President, respectively, OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha and the Heads of Delegation of Qatar, the Gambia and Malaysia on behalf of the three geographical regions of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation delivered their speeches. In addition, the Chairman of the Islamic Development Bank, H.E. Muhammad Sulaiman Al Jasser, H.E. Abdullah bin Saleh KAMEL, the President of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development (ICCD) and Mr. Rifat HİSARCIKLIOĞLU, President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB) and the Vice-President of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development (ICCD) made their speeches during the opening session.

The theme of this year’s COMCEC Ministerial Exchange of Views Session was determined as “Digital Transformation of Payment Systems in OIC Member Countries” in order to share experiences and discuss cooperation opportunities among Member Countries.

During the COMCEC Ministerial Exchange of Views Session, Dr. Abdelilah BELATIK, Secretary General at the General Council for Islamic Banks and Financial Institutions (CIBAFI), delivered a keynote speech on recent trends in digital payment systems.

In the Ministerial Exchange Session, chaired by H.E. Vice President Mr. Cevdet YILMAZ, the Ministers and Heads of Delegations of the Member Countries made statements and interventions on their country experiences with respect to the theme of the Ministerial Exchange of Views Session. 

In this respect, the Honorable Ministers and Heads of Delegations emphasized the actions taken to address the main challenges faced by the Member Countries in digital payment systems as well as their efforts to strengthen the necessary technical infrastructure in this domain. They also stressed that cooperation in the field of digital payment systems would make a great contribution to achieving considerable progress in this crucial field.

Transport 23

The 23rd Meeting of the COMCEC Transport and Communications Working Group was held on September 24-25, 2024 in Ankara, Türkiye with the theme of “Development of Intelligent Transport Systems in the OIC Member Countries”.

The Meeting of the Transport and Communication Working Group has been attended by the representatives of . .. Member Countries and representatives of the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Center for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), International Road Transport Union (IRU) and COMCEC Coordination Office (CCO).

Participants shared their experiences, successful implementations and challenges faced by OIC Member Countries on intelligent transportation systems and discussed how to increase efforts in this area. In addition, the findings of the policy guidance prepared specifically for the theme of the meeting were also discussed. The Meeting came up with concrete policy recommendations to be submitted to the 40th COMCEC Ministerial Session.

Turizm 23

The 23rd Meeting of the COMCEC Tourism Working Group was held on September 24th-25th, 2024 in Ankara, Türkiye, with the theme, “Developing and Branding Gastronomy Tourism Destinations  within OIC”.

The Meeting was attended by the representatives of 19 Member States. Representatives of the COMCEC Coordination Office, SESRIC( Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries) and  Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality also attended the Meeting.

The Representatives of the Member States shared their experiences, achievements, and challenges regarding gastronomy in their respective countries. The participants also deliberated on the aforementioned theme and considered the study “Developing and Branding Gastronomy Tourism Destinations within OIC” commissioned by the COMCEC Coordination Office.

In addition to the research report prepared on the aforementioned theme, the case studies were discussed in detail at the meeting. Along with the opinions and suggestions of the participants and the findings revealed within the scope of the relevant study, the draft policy recommendations on the subject were formulated.

The 23rd Meeting of the COMCEC Trade Working Group (TWG) was held on 19-20 September 2024, in Ankara, Türkiye, with the theme “Improving Quality Infrastructure in the OIC Member Countries”.

The representatives of 19 Member Countries, which have notified their focal points for the TWG, attended the Meeting. The Meeting was further attended by the representatives of SMIIC, SESRIC, ICDT, ITFC, ICD, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and COMCEC Coordination Office.

Participants shared their experiences, successful practices and challenges regarding the quality infrastructure in the OIC Member Countries and discussed how efforts on improvement of QI specifically focusing on Metrology can be further enhanced. Participants also listened to the main findings of the Policy Guide prepared specifically on the theme of the Meeting. The meeting come up with concrete policy recommendations to be submitted to the 40th  COMCEC Ministerial Session.
