21st Meeting of the COMCEC Agriculture Working Group

The 21st Meeting of the COMCEC Agriculture Working Group was held on n October 12-13, 2023, in Ankara, Türkiye with the theme of  “Ensuring the Sustainability of Agricultural Inputs to Combat Food Insecurity in OIC Member Countries”.

The representatives of Member States, which have notified their focal points for the Agriculture Working Group, attended the Meeting. The meeting was further attended by the   Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), SESRIC and COMCEC Coordination Office (CCO).

Representatives of the Member States and international institutions have shared their experiences and best practice examples about the sustainability of agricultural inputs to combat food insecurity. Participants have also listened to the findings of the research report which is being prepared specifically on the theme of the Meeting.  The meeting come up with concrete policy recommendations to be submitted to the 39th COMCEC Ministerial Session.

21st Meeting of the COMCEC Transport And Communications WG

The 21st Meeting of COMCEC Transport and Communications Working Group was held in Ankara on October 12-13, 2023, with the theme of “Measuring the Environmental Impacts of Transport Infrastructures in OIC Member Countries”.

Along with the representatives of Member States, the representatives of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and COMCEC Coordination Office (CCO) attended the meeting.

The representatives of the Member States have shared their experiences regarding the environmental impacts of transport infrastructures in their respective countries. Furthermore, they have deliberated global best practices concerning how to assess the environmental effects of transport infrastructures, success factors and challenges faced in the OIC Member Countries. The meeting has mainly considered the main findings of the Guide titled “Measuring the Environmental Impacts of Transport Infrastructures in OIC Member Countries” which is conducted by the CCO and the COMCEC Transport and Communications Outlook. The participants came up with some important policy recommendations, as the main output of the meeting, to be submitted to COMCEC Ministerial Session.

“Within the scope of the preparations for the COMCEC SME Program, an online meeting was held on October 11, 2023 with the participation of the representatives of the OIC Member Countries to discuss the current situation of the SMEs in the OIC geography, the main challenges they face and the proposed solutions for them. In this context, the results of the survey organized for the member countries were evaluated and the draft program was consulted with the member countries and their opinions and suggestions were received.”

20th Meeting Of The COMCEC Financial Cooperation WG

The 20th Meeting of the COMCEC Financial Cooperation Working Group was held on 9-10 October 2023, in Ankara, Türkiye, with the theme of Improving Cooperation Among Central Banks in Terms of Digital Currencies: Challenges and Prospects for OIC Member Countries.

The representatives of 14 Member States, which have notified their focal points for the Financial Cooperation Working Group, attended the Meeting. The meeting was further attended by the representatives of the SESRIC, SMIIC, IsDB, ADFIMI, OIC Exchanges Forum, COMCEC Capital Markets Regulators Forum, OIC-COMCEC Central Banks Forum.

Representatives of the Central Banks as well as other relevant institutions of the Member States have shared their experiences, successful practices, and challenges in improving cooperation with respect to Digital Currencies. The Meeting has also considered all case-country studies along with the final draft of the research report prepared on the said theme and participants discussed policy recommendations that will be submitted to the Ministerial Session of the 39th COMCEC Session.

21st Meeting of the COMCEC Poverty Alleviation WG

The 21st Meeting of the COMCEC Poverty Alleviation Working Group (PAWG) was held on 9-10 October 2023, in Ankara, Türkiye, with the theme “Effective Vocational Education and Training Strategies to Reduce Youth Unemployment in the OIC Member Countries”.

The representatives of 12 Member States, which have notified their focal points for the Poverty Alleviation Working Group, attended the Meeting. The meeting was further attended by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), The Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum (ICYF) and COMCEC Coordination Office (CCO).

Representatives of Member States and international institutions shared their experiences, successful practices and challenges regarding the youth unemployment problem in OIC member countries and discussed how vocational training programs can be developed that can contribute to reducing youth unemployment. Participants also listened to the findings of the research report prepared specifically on the theme of the Meeting.

COMCEC Focal Points Meeting

More than 160 COMCEC Working Group Focal Points and National Focal Points from 37 member countries participated in the COMCEC Focal Points Meeting held online on September 19-20.

During the Meeting, the latest developments regarding the COMCEC Working Groups and COMCEC Project Support Programs have been shared with the focal points and the activities carried out under the COMCEC umbrella have been discussed with the focal points. Moreover, the COMCEC working group focal points convened on the basis of different sectors such as Trade, Financial Cooperation, Agriculture, Transport and Communication, Tourism, Poverty Alleviation and discussed the work to be carried out in the upcoming period and the working group themes and research topics for the period 2024-2026.

The significance of efficient coordination at the national level by the focal points of COMCEC related activities and the related country experiences and good practices were among the issues emphasized during the meeting. Furthermore, the meeting also reviewed the progress of the COMCEC Flagship Projects such as TPS-OIC, the OIC Arbitration Center and the OIC/COMCEC International Investment Fund, and emphasized the need for more contribution and participation of the countries represented by the focal points in these projects.

Lastly, a training session was conducted towards the focal points on the basic principles, procedures and methods regarding the preparation and submission of project proposals within the framework of the COMCEC Project Support Programs and the experiences of the project host countries in previous years were briefed to the participants by the relevant focal points.
